Wood knives are great, and lots of martial artists prefer them, but wood is hard and can splinter. It also looks like wood. The rubber knife is soft enough to stab at you really hard and not even leave a bruise (or at least a big bruise). The silver paint job adds to the psychological effectiveness of your training.
